Creative professionals have gotten accustomed to hearing their hard-fought careers will soon become obsolete due to artificial intelligence.
Whether it’s photography and design, screenwriting and filmmaking, songwriting, storytelling, advertising—or any other pursuit involving words, pictures or sounds—the defensive reaction is to dodge the topic, and opt for denial and ignorance over acceptance and engagement. Not to mention being nervous about the future.
But what will it take to overcome these fears?
THE GRAIN is a new project dedicated to confronting these issues through crucial conversations that aren’t about being for or against technology, but rather exploring the pleasure and peril of AI and the future of creativity.
Ronit Novak is a vivacious art director, photo editor, mentor, teacher and public speaker based in Toronto. She’s spent over 20 years getting paid to make media, fostering relationships and nurturing careers, and she’s not afraid to dish out some tough love. Ronit cares about creative industries as both a producer and consumer, along with a personal drive to help talent thrive—because her own disciplines might be similarly impacted by AI.
“I chose the name THE GRAIN as a reference to film photography and the need to look closely in a way that’s individualized and granular,” says Ronit. “With the growing influence of artificial intelligence, I want artists to stop and think, to stabilize, and remind themselves of their inherent value.”
The first four chats will premiere in October 2024, with a teaser trailer now available on Apple, Spotify, Substack or wherever you get podcasts:
Oct. 8: Photography with Boris Eldagsen and Miles Astray. Two international image artists whose recent contest pranks sparked debate on what makes a photograph real.
Oct. 15: Advertising with Ian Mackenzie of McCann Worldgroup. The global AI creative lead for the agency compares his new role to embracing the internet in the 1990s.
Oct. 22: Filmmaking with Walter Woodman of Shy Kids. What happened after a short film created with OpenAI’s new software Sora got the attention of Hollywood.
Oct. 29: Design with Una Janicijevic. The creative director, collage artist and personal friend of Ronit talks about the need to bring a human touch to THE GRAIN.
And stay tuned for more, recorded at Made Human Studios in Toronto’s Little Jamaica neighbourhood.
THE GRAIN can also be followed on Substack, LinkedIn and Instagram, where Ronit is charting the relationship between creativity and AI each day. This independent platform is designed for anyone interested in the modern machinations of artistic expression.
Ronit Novak is available to talk more about AI’s impact on creativity, or any other insights related to THE GRAIN.
