Keep your voice
How to think with AI without losing yourself
Over the past three years, I’ve spoken with artists, educators, journalists, creative directors, students, and technologists about AI. Surprisingly, our conversations don’t circle around which tool to use. People aren’t asking me how to write the perfect prompt.
They’re asking a more important question: How do we think with these tools?
What they’re trying to figure out is whether AI belongs in their work or not, and how to use it without feeling like they’re handing over the most important parts of themselves.
Those conversations are a big part of why I started THE GRAIN. I wanted a place to explore AI beyond the hype cycle, and beyond the simple narratives of either embracing it completely or rejecting it outright.
One of the earliest guests on THE GRAIN podcast was Dré Labre. Since then, we’ve shared many conversations, including THE GRAIN’s ADVERTISING vs. AI panel last year. We come at this topic from different directions. Dré’s background is in creative technology and innovation; mine is in journalism, editorial storytelling, and culture. Yet we keep arriving at the same place: voice, judgment, authorship, and creative agency matter more than ever.
As these tools become easier to use, the human side of creativity becomes more valuable. The ability to decide what matters, what belongs, what feels true, and what deserves to exist in the world.
That’s what led us to create Keep Your Voice. On July 15, we’ll be hosting the workshop at the MaRS Discovery District in Toronto, bringing together creative professionals who want practical experience working with large language models while staying connected to their own judgment, values, and point of view.
This isn’t a workshop about becoming an AI expert. It’s an opportunity to develop a framework for working with AI without losing yourself in the process.
If that resonates, we’d love to have you join us. Learn more here:
Early bird registration is $195 CAD + HST until June 26. After that, registration is $275 CAD + HST.
